The Film Archive commissioned musicians Warren Maxwell, Maaka
McGregor and Himiona Grace to devise a new soundtrack and bring
fresh perspective to Under the Southern Cross a 'Maori
folk drama' made by Hollywood's Universal Studios in 1928. The film
was shot around Rotorua, Waitomo and White Island under the
direction of adventurer Alexander Markey however; he was replaced
after six months by his assistant after having shot 28,000ft of
film for a 6,000ft feature with only half the story told. Film
